I came across this article about how 2008 was proclaimed the year of reading. In the article they said Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham) has never read a book, but yet she writes them. How does that really work? What about her kids? I think this occurs a lot today. Hell, we have a lot of “authors” who do not really write their own books. I mean, every time one of these “tell all” books comes out by these former video groupies, do people actually think they wrote them? No, they are more like dictations to a person they sold their story to. Foolishness!
Anyway, the article asks, does reading make you clever? Not necessarily. Reading does stimulate the cortex, and does improve things like:
- vocabulary
- grammar
- spelling
- writing
- comprehension
- reasoning
- analytical skills
People seem to think that there is tangible knowledge in books, but its not measurable knowledge. It’s not like needing to know something and googling it. If you want an understanding of a subject beyond skimming it then yes read books. Books go in-depth while the internet and other mediums give you only general ideas about things. And this is just non-fiction.
Fiction books are where imagination begins. Why do we begin telling our children stories and letting them watch cartoons? To stimulate creativity and teach lessons. Stories are oratory books. By giving children books it internalizes their ability to engage in a fantasy whenever they want. However, people aren’t creative enough anymore. Reading fiction requires patience. You have to let a story grow and develop and we are victims of an instant gratification society. We want what we want and we want it now! A good number of people in the younger generations (this includes me at times) have had their imagination muted by television , movies , and video games.
To answer the article, cleverness can’t be learned, its an innate ability, sort of like sarcasm. You can’t train to be sarcastic. There is no google search for sarcasm or cleverness. But you can draw inspiration from characters in books and mimic them. Learning does not just come from a classroom. People need to step out of that box. Lately, I’ve been slacking on my reading. I’ve been trying to diversify the books I’m reading. Read more non-fiction. My book I just started today is a mystery. I started trying to get back to where I read all day every day when I wasn’t busy. To start I’ve been trying to dedicate at least one hour a day to reading. Sometimes I’m not so successful.

HBO’s new series True Blood stars Anna Paquin and a few other people who i don’t know, but so far its pretty good. It’s based on a series of books by Charlaine HarrisI have watched all four episodes and each one has been pleasantly surprising. My friend says that the way they use the metaphor of vampires and humans is reminiscent of blacks and whites after the Civil War with the central idea of assimilation. She said that every time they say vampires she replaces it with the N word. Sometimes, it really does seem interchangeable.
I like the show because, well, I just like it. I don’t have a thing for vamps because I hated Buffy the Vampire Slayer so it can’t be inherent. True Blood takes place in Bon Temps, Louisiana and they have the WORST accents on this show. Especially the black chick. She’s the lead character from “How She Moves,” which I never saw. She is sort of stereotypical in the show-angry black chick with deep seeded issues stemming from a childhood with a drunk mother to loneliness issues. However, her character is obsessed with knowledge and reads on things from medical issues to the law and justice system. Either way her character can be slightly annoying but entertaining and vulnerable. We all love a little vulnerability. I know I do.
I do have questions about this show. Only read on if you don’t mind slight spoiling if you haven’t seen it. How did she become telepathic. What crossed in her genes. Her being Anna Paquin, Sookie is her characters name. She is the main human character of the show. she is slightly eccentric being that she hears others thoughts. So of course the old country folk think she’s a “retard” on a count of the fact that she think she a psychic and all [/end sarcasm] LOL. She has an affection for the new vampire in town, the first that they know of in Bon Temps. Everyone thinks she’s going to get herself in some sort of trouble, especially with random killings going on. Sookie’s brother, Jason, is dumb as a box of rocks. He somehow keeps being a murder suspect… wonder where this is going. I personally think eventually he will become a vampire. Those are just my thoughts stemming from his activities and his anti-vampire prejudices.
Overall, I plan to continue watching this show and seeing where it goes. I heard it already got renewed for a second season and they are only 5 episodes into the first season. HBO generally has shows that have a cult like following-The Wire, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Carnival was an HBO show right? Oz was big too. I will continue to watch without getting my hopes up too high. Although Anna Paquin is someone I think has good acting potential I’m not so sure of her believeability in this role. Stay tuned…

“I think penises are little Napoleons that’ll try to take over the world.”- My friend the Asian

This was the perfect time to use that quote! Can you imagine waking up to find your penis gone!! For the ladies, you’re breasts?? Philip Seaton, 61 went in for a circumcision as part of a medical procedure in Louisville, KY and came out with his whole peen gone. That’s got to be worse than the hospital in Trenton, NJ that I went to once! Remind me never to get hurt in Louisville! Anywho, he and his wife are now suing the doctors for obvious reasons, among those, “loss of enjoyment in life.” I whole heartedly agree that enjoyment is gone, which is why I’d never want to hurt my mammories! This doctor must have idolized Lorena Bobbitt and waited for an opportunity to recreate her masterpiece. In the defense of the doctors, they say that they cut off Seaton’s “little friend” because they found cancer. Now, I have two questions… cancer cells are normally internal, correct? And a circumcision can be performed without an internal examination of the peen, right? So did he go looking for cancer or other problematic instances as an excuse to do this? Secondly, Seaton is also suing the anesthesiologist for using general anesthesia when he didn’t sign off on it. If this was a simple circumcision why did they feel the need to use general anesthesia? Something does NOT sound right there in my mind. One more question, as a doctor, doesn’t he have the right to offer this man a second opinion. Let him know what his options are. I mean, this seriously wasn’t a life or death matter. It wasn’t like they went in to replace a kidney and saw cancer on his liver and had to chop half it off for his survival. Many people, old or young, choose to deal with chemo and radiation or even not treat the cancer cells at all. This man doesn’t have that option nor the option to have sex anymore. That sucks. Too many people have a God complex…

Dear Coco,
I’d like to first commend you for not showing us you’re camel this time. I am thoroughly impressed with your efforts to look classier and not trashier. I know it hurt. These baby steps you’re taking are wonderful. One day, hopefully soon, we can achieve the beauty and glamor that are necessary for a celebrity wife. Wait, is Ice-T a real celebrity still? Ok, sorry for the little interruption. Now, let’s proceed. I am loving your shoes. they work with this dress. Although the dress is skin tight and probably made of Lycra and spandex and came from your local Easy Pickings it is better than bright pink pants. Coupled with these WONDERFUL shoes, you look a little….trampish I must say.But not in a sleezy hotel kinda way like before. This time you’re in more of a I like my clothes too small kinda way. I will gladly take these shoes off your hands, or even settle for a duplicate pair to help assist in your complete transformation. I love the contrast in colors and the little details. They would look so great on my perfect size 8 feet. Share?
OH, who the hell am I kidding I’d kill for a body like yours. But I’d dress it soooo differently, less cleavage. When they are THAT huge, you don’t have to try so hard my dearest CoCo. They will show themselves. I am glad you covered up for this premiere, Nights in Rodanthe isn’t the kind of movie I know you’re used to watching. You’re usual outfits are more suited for Naughty Girls at Home premieres. Now Richard Gere can live to make another sappy romance movie I’ll probably never watch! Congrats!!!
P.S. don’t forget to break me off with those shoes!

Yesterday I read an article about the different debate approaches of Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. I briefly read the article, wondering how the hell was this old man (McCain) going to stand a chance next to a viral man nearly, if not, 30 years his junior with a much sharper mind (Obama). McCain graduated near the bottom of his navel class whereas Obama is Harvard educated and a much better speaker. In the article the authors said McCain had a lackadaisical approach to this debate, not really giving it much practice while Obama was entering “debate camp.” Interesting. At least to me.
So with this information stored in my ever growing brain it wasn’t too big of a shock to hear that McCain wants to postpone the debate to focus on the “economy.” Yes. Now why would he want to do this? Shouldn’t this be a time to hear the different approaches the two candidates are proposing for this “crises?” The are going to be elected right in the middle of it. Yes, I say go on and debate about his issue among other issues. This is simply unacceptable. Obama, like a real leader, wants to proceed with the debates. In reality, let’s use a “presidental” example to stress this, you have to be able to carry on business no matter what. Imagine we are at war( a real big war, like WW2) and our economy is suffering. Can he just postpone the war to deal with the financial situation? You have to have balance and be able to delegate your time in an effective way. If that means you miss some sleep, so be it. As a leader of a country the unexpected happens and you have to roll with the punches. No, let’s not post pone these debates Senator, let’s see how well your 72 year old brain works. Show me what you got! On the Daily Show, he said something to the effect of, why would you suspend your campaign? Isn’t this what the campaign is about? What you’re going to do to rectify/alleviate the situation…. Think about it. Talk about it…

When you find a good pair of shoes you should love them. Care for them. In fact, you should buy two pair! LOL. I had this pair last spring and I loved them so much that I wore them out. I mean wore them OUT! I tried to get the nice suede material cleaned, but it wasn’t the same. So, I did what any shoe lover would do-bought a new pair. This is why I love the internet, because I would have had to search store after store after store after warehouse to try to find these shoes, let alone in my size since they were from last season. I had to first find out the shoe name, because I didn’t even know it. I just knew the brand, so I searched and searched. Then I searched for them in the desired color. I finally found them AND they were cheap, which they should have been since they were last seasons shoes. I got them for a whooping $25.34 and then 6.00 for shipping. Which I consider a great deal since they were much more than that before I wore them out, LOL. This is the Tribeca Prime Suspect shoe and he is being re-introduced into my closet with his other “friends.” In the past I might not have been so resourceful, I would have searched and searched for a comprable shoe, but no more. And why should I? I like new shoes as much as the next girl (probably more) but I also love the shoes that I have. And as I get older, I am definitely pickier and choosier with the shoes I buy. And I like them so much more for that, which is why I invest in keeping them. Getting those little things on the bottom replaced or repairing a scuff is an absolute must with shoes you love. It’s worth it, trust me.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am extremely excited about the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy tomorrow night. Ugly Betty too, but Grey’s is my little addiction, even though I probably won’t watch it during the actual airing due to my wonderful Digital Video Recorder, but it will bring great joy in knowing that it will be there. I also discovered last night was the premiere of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I was pleasantly surprised to see my DVR record light on, and checked to see what it was. I was delighted. This is the good thing about fall! I tried to get a countdown to put in here, but was unsuccessful, but oh well. Viva La Grey’s!! I can’t wait to see what develops between Callie and Hahn.. or even Derek and Meredith… And wow.. Izzey’s kiss with Alex…. so many questions!!!

Where did the money go? Isn’t that the wonderful question plaguing us all in this “economical crisis” that the US is in? My question is slightly different, where are we getting the money is my question. Supposedly we are in a 5 trillion dollar deficit. So where is the federal government getting these billions of dollars to “lend” the huge companies that are going bankrupt. Where? Check it. Me and a friend are talking and we’re like isn’t it a little ass backwards to give the kapoot mortgage/loan companies money versus giving the public the money to be able to pay them back. Isn’t that what should be a focus? Why is this acceptable? I don’t understand. It’s almost as if the powers that be got together and said, “Yes, let’s make the people poorer and keep these rich idiots in place to continue to rape the public. Yay for big business, Down with middle class.” Something is wrong and yet no one is really digging into why this is cool. Why are my tax dollars going to failed companies and not my local schools.
Other money issues.. why has it been found out that the state of New Jersey has been pummeling monies into the Rutgers football team. Shady, under-the-table dealings are why Rutgers is pushing for a stadium expansion for an undeserving team. It’s a ploy by the state to generate revenue. Or is it? Someone needs to be accountable for the money, but no one is being called out.
And why are Republicans surprised that they are taking the brunt of the blame? Have they not been in favor of big business since… FOREVER? I can’t believe that I’m actually living in what could really be a depression or is it that already but we just can’t see it? All these money “crises” have really taught me that money isn’t as tangible as we think and that it really is arbitrary. The US is giving out promises of dollars to save ghosts of companies that exist to simply take our “hard earned” money in the long run. But yet everyone is concerned about “making paper.” As Diamond said in Players Club, “Make the money girl, don’t let the money make you.” PREACH!!!

Wellington Boots. I didn’t even know what they were called, I used to refer to them as rain boots, but now that I know their name I can talk about them. I used to hate these boots. They came out of nowhere and then they were everywhere in the blink of an eye. But now, after so many bouts with cold wet feet, I see the essentialness of them and have said I can’t wait to find myself a pair. I can’t believe I made such a drastic turn around, the next thing you know I’ll be saying how the UGG boot is cool and cute (someone stop me if I ever get there, but you get my drift). My dilemma is that each and every time I find a cute pair of these boots, they don’t fit around the logs I am forced to call calves. This depresses me because these are a shoe/boot that you can be super creative and cutesy with. No one is going to object to you having butterflies and hearts on your cute plastic rain boot, but if you had a coat with all that, you might be ridiculed. I am desperate to find some to fit me with fall fast approaching and we all know that fall equals rain. Winter also equals rain (and snow!). I will not stand for wet pants legs anymore. Take a stand for dry pant legs all around and help me find these boots with a wide calf!!! It is essential that it fit loosely over the calf because your jeans and pants should tuck into the boot, not drape over them.

I know I’m very late with this, but it doesn’t mean its not still worth talking about. I remember a few weeks ago I read a story about how in Flint, Michigan they were putting a ban on sagging pants. I thought this was bogus and a bunch of straight cock-a-mammy bullcrap. I hate to see a young man with his pants hanging super low as much as the next person however I do not feel that it should be against the law. This “law” is a direct assault on what many people deem “hip-hop” culture. And this is a tragedy because more and more “hip-hop” culture is becoming “mainstream” culture. but I guess the powers that be don’t like that too much.
So, I was slightly elated to read that a judge in Florida deemed this law unconstitutional after a 17 year old kid was held in custody over night for showing too much of his boxers while riding a bike. And it really is. I mean, the cops really had time to focus on this kids pants level on a bike, while people continue to peddle drugs in our communities.. Where is the logic on that one? Yes, let’s launch a war on peoples clothes and continue to let drug dealers and rapists run the streets. That sounds like government I can believe in. What other civil liberties can we take back from our citizens. Once “they” begin telling us how to wear our clothes it will lead to curfews and other forms of government control. They are already putting chips in some passports (or so I’ve heard). When will it end. How can you fight a war in another country to help them achieve democracy when regulation is going to extremes at home. Something doesn’t sound right to me. I hope that other states follow this judge’s lead and do not enforce this new law. It hasn’t been passed on a federal level so I hope to keep it that way. We as people really need to take back our government. The easiest and best way is start locally. Government thinks that we don’t care, its time to show that we do and won’t stand for their shenanigans any longer!
While searching for an image to this post, I came across a white nationalist website, stormfront.org.. I was totally taken aback by the extreme racism and “conservativeness” as the posters called it. I was so shocked on what I was reading, I can’t even talk about it.. just go check it out and make your own assumptions.

I have a wonderful video playing at my job today to celebrate this document… even though so many things that occur today are UNCONSTITUTIONAL… I should get John McCain’s quote about how he wants people who will apply interpret the constitution as the forefathers wanted it… Anywho… everyone is all handing out free stuff in honor of Constitution day.. I got a handbook with the Constitution in it, an American flag key chain, and a free piece of cake… ALL is well when there is cake involved… So to celebrate Constitution day I say go out and say some really obnoxious crap and blame it on your right to free speech… and tell them its constitution day so you can say whatever you like… And please… make sure you fully understand the right before you violate it or take advantage of it… Because not knowing is never a good enough excuse…

“The Declaration of Independence was the promise; the Constitution was the fulfillment.”

“A woman’s heart should be so close to God’s that a man has to seek him to find her…”
This quote was inside an email I received. This quote, combined with an intense conversation someone and I had the other day made me question, Why are we so concerned with someone else’s proximity to church, God, and spirituality? I think that people are overly concerned with others religious beliefs, and for what? Does it make someone a better Christian if they can convert their sacrilegious friends over to the Holy word? Does God smile on them then and only then? I don’t see why people are so obsessed with judging someones faith based on how much they go to church. Why is it so hard to believe that someone can be close to God and not support organized religion? Why does it matter to the next person, seriously? It has been my experience that churches can be sometimes filled with many “half” Christians. Folk who step out to the club Saturday night and praise Him with that same hand that held the drink the night before. OR you have the ones who are “SAVED” in the sanctuary and get in the streets and curse folk out or are just plain rude. They spend their time talking about the folk they say at Church that week and how “Oh, Sister so -and so- , No she didn’t.” I feel that if you are someone who is truly “SAVED” you have subscribed to the thoughts that God accepts us as we are.
Now, if someone wants to go to church and get their blessings, I support that fully. But I’m at a point in my life, probably stemming from my own personal experiences where I have issues with church. I remember being like probably between the ages of 10-12 and my grandmother would force me and my cousin to go to Church and Sunday School each week. Most of these weeks she would spend home while we went to Sunday school and she’d join us later at church. Sometimes she didn’t join us. But it was like as soon as we left church, she was happy for a few minutes and then went back to cursing up a storm. I never understood it. I always imagine Christians to be good, kind hearted souls… she never embodied that. Not that she wasn’t kind.. to others.. it just didn’t give me faith in the power of prayer either because things were not easy for us growing up.
Even at work, there is this lady, Lady N, who is always talking about how she spent her wonerful weekends doing church events and passes out little green Bibles trying to convert us sinners to a better place. But then she does conniving things to get her way in the work place, how is this Christian-like? I don’t understand it. I try to keep my relationship with God a personal thing. No I am not ashamed of it. I will shout it to the mountain tops that I believe in God. But I don’t feel that by declaring myself a Christian I have to come down on religions like Buddism, Muslims, Taoism, and even Judaism. In fact, I have a desire to read about all the religions to see how they go about relationships with the higher being. I feel that that can increase my spirituality. End the end, we should be judged by our spirituality not by how well we followed organized religion…

I can’t pretend I’ve been living under a rock for the past several weeks when in fact I have been quite tuned in to the mockery that has become of American Politics within the Republican Party. I intently followed the Democratic convention and was quite impressed with the speeches I either watched or read online. From Michelle Obama’s introduction of her husband to Hilary Clinton’s vow of “No way, no how, No McCain,” and Obama’s speech to end the convention. I was inspired as a voter to see the unity that transpired there. I mean who could forget the low blows that Hilary delivered in her race in the Primaries against Obama. But in the end, if she believes in her party’s beliefs she would have to support him, which she did. So, not to be one to make senseless judgements I said I would follow the Republic National Convention or at least read the speeches online. I wanted to be as unbiased as possible. And then I read Thompson’s speech. And I realized, why did I have to be unbiased? Why does everyone feel the need to be Politically Correct? I believe what believe for my reasons, why should I care what Palin or McCain has to say.
Sarah Palin has been a hot news topic ever since she was announced as McCain’s pick for VP 11 days ago. Now, even if I wasn’t an Obama/Biden supporter I have several problems with this selection stemming from the fact that her and McCain only met once prior to her being selected. Who the hell are you? Nothing you can do can give voters enough information about you in the, what, 8 weeks before the election. This is purely a strategic move by the mud-slinging republicans to pry up the ‘woman’ vote, hoping to get Hilary supporters who were only her fans for woman’s sake. Secondly, I just can’t support some of her stances. How can you be against teaching teens about safe sex? I mean, with teenage pregnancies on the rise who are we not to put the education out there. To make it seem like every 17 year old pregnant girl will be welcomed with open arms is spreading a false reality. And in some communities its a perpetuation of a stereotype. It is NOT ok to fail to practice safe sex. With STDs and all those other forms of sexual baggage running rampant people need all the information they can get. Hell I’m grown and I still learn new things all the time. Teens need to be educated to reduce risk. No, I don’t believe the sex education should start in kindergarten, but it does need to happen. No one’s excuse should be “I didn’t know” when the information is out there.
Now, she also doesn’t believe that humans are responsible for our global climate change, better known as global warming. If not us, then who? Are we not depleting the earth of its natural resources? Are we not manipulating the earth for our own purposes. I mean in China they control rain, that can’t be natural, that has to have some side effects. All the oil drilling has to have some effect. Do cars not cause pollution? Is that not bad for the ecosystem. Have we as humans not killed off many species and now realize how important they were to the ecosystem? Do we not pump our soil full of pesticides and hormones for the sake of profit? How are we NOT responsible for our global climate change. Not to mention her comments trivializing the value of education. I just can’t find something good that I want to say about her. I have tried to, but I can’t. And why should I, for the sake of being PC?
Now, I am firm believer that celebrities should be seen and not heard and that they need not voice their opinions, because usually they don’t make any sense are filled with ignorant unasked for commentary. However, every once in a while someone comes along with some sense. In this instance Matt Damon has said that Palins quick rise resembles a “really bad Disney movie.” He also addressed the very real fact that it is highly possible that McCain (72) will die in his first term and that would leave Palin as president. He does not see the correlation in how her being a hockey mom will aid her in facing down Vladimir Putin. “It’s totally absurd and I don’t understand why people aren’t talking about how absurd it is.” He is so right. Do we really want her taking the helm in McCain’s absence? There is a huge elephant in the room and it stems from the Reps claiming that Obama lacks the skills needed, does Palin?
The conspiracy theorist deep down inside of me feels that this could be some sick rooted republican ploy. I mean, what if they wanted her all along, but since no one knew her they couldn’t place her as a front runner. Sort of how Cheney is really the “brains” behind the Bush administration. And they say McCain was a great soldier so he’s experienced. Since when does being a soldier make you a leader. And in the words of someone I know, “He couldn’t have been that good of soldier if he got caught.” (insert hysterical laughter.) In all the comments I read on CNN to the Damon story, there were so many extremist, like this one:
“Wow, the best the Democrats can do is the guy who was Ben Affleck’s supporting actor – and trying to scare people into thinking that John McCain may die if elected? And the Republicans are the one’s making up stuff, using scare tactics, and not interested in talking about the issues?I mean, what’s more likely, an old guy dying, or a young black male being shot by another young black male? Come on, get your heads our of your butts!!!”
-
todd
I’m not offended by what he said, because I say down with being Politically Correct, say what we feel. And my feelings are Vote Obama/Biden. Ok, maybe I am a little offended, because since when is Obama a young black man? And what does he do that puts him in line of fire, besides run for president. And there are some KKK folk out there who don’t feel a black man should be president, so they would love to assasinate him. If young men are putting themselves in danger, slanging rock on the corner or whatever it is that puts them in line of fire, something is wrong with the situation. And if you put yourself in that situation, knowing the possible results, maybe you deserve the results. NO, I don’t wish harm on folk, but I think if you step in the line of fire, you get hit. However, no one ever talks about how the government doesn’t help the situation. If they cared about black on black crime, they would take steps to help cease it. Instead they perpetuate it. But that is a whole different story.

September 9, 2008

I had an interesting discussion the other night about audiobooks, e-books, and regular old books. It seems to be that audiobooks are on the rise and books are on the decline. For me, part of the joy of reading comes from flipping the pages of the book and slipping into a world that isn’t my own. I don’t see the joy in listening to someone read to you. Usually, when someone talks to me for an extended period of time I tune them out. I only have a listening period of so long before my thoughts take over and I don’t know what they said. I feel the same would happen with an audiobook. And, why are audiobooks so much more expensive than a plain old book? I heard someone say their audiobook cost $119. WTF! Why waste that money when you can spend 24.99 and it won’t scratch, you can’t lose the file and if you did misplace a book, its much easier to replace it (and less expensive).
E-books. Oh sweet e-books. another rising trend that I could not partake in. I don’t understand how people can read at the computer for extended periods of time. Imagine having your eyes pierced open reading Harry Potter on your laptop… talk about a headache. And doctors have said that its not good to stare at monitors for so long. It has so many harmful effects that I can’t and won’t name. And sure, you can print out an e-book, but wouldn’t that be same as buying a book (probably waste more paper actually)? I just don’t see the logic. I think this goes back to that dependency on technology.
I love a book. I fantasize about one day having a grand library in my home and sitting there reading books I want. It would have dark wood (because it just looks so nice) and I’d have first editions of all my favorite books. I’d also have one of those cool ladders that slides across the shelves because I’m too short to reach the top shelf. I was devastated when I was younger, my grandmother threw out lots of my books when we moved once. I mean I had a slew of Baby Sitter Club books, Christopher Pike, Goosebumps, and every book from the Little House on the Prairie series including the not so talked about one after Laura got married. AND I had a first edition of Richard Wrights The Long Dream. I’m still searching for that book everywhere. I think if libraries had better hours and maybe even a coffee shop they’d thrive still. I see plenty of people, myself included sitting at Barnes & Noble reading books they don’t intend to buy. I know I’d have my ass at the public library because then I could borrow the book and take it back without a problem. Some books make it home and others don’t. So here’s a cry to our local libraries-Take back your throne. Open Later, Serve coffee/tea and snacks. Trust me!
