Yup, I’m using you for dinner

May 19, 2010

I began to follow @CerealDaters one day after a #FF (Follow Friday for non-twitterers) suggestion from someone [I think I'm the last person who actually clicks on those] but it was a great click. I love this blog. So real .. and being a newly single gal (is 5 months still new? ) its great stuff. This one in particular was something that summed me up. I tend to not go out with someone if I can automatically tell I’m not interested and I can tell very easily too .. But then I said, you know what, just go. Get some free dinner. Then I came across this post “Six reasons Why Dating for Dinner is OK” on Cereal Daters … FREAKING AWESOME!! I love when my thoughts are brought to fruition by someone else, lol.

Thanks guys for showing me I’m not alone, and that its not entirely selfish. My fav line from the article comes from #6:

Who the eff cares? I take myself far too seriously. I won’t be the first girl to go out for the hell of it and I won’t be the last. I’ve got all these years of pointless dating to catch up on

To read the article, and see what the other 5 reasons are, check them out: Cereal Daters

But if you don’t want to click, here are the 6 reasons ( you will have to click for the GREAT reasoning and blurbs for each one )

1. Men need chances

2. Men lie, cheat, and just do awful things to women

3. It’s not really dishonest if you’re gettign something in return

4. They did it in the 30s!

5. I’m Bored

and #6 again:

Who the EFF cares???

My first Michael Jackson impersonator show

May 4, 2010

I’ve been AWOL lately because I took a trip to Boca Chica, Dominican Republic  to bask in the glorious sunshine! (I do have to live up to my name!)

Anywho, the hotel I stayed at, Hotetur Dominican Bay (review to follow) held nightly shows, my favorite was their Michael Jackson show. They did an AWESOME job. I don’t know if they hired people for this, or if these were every day employees, but they got a standing ovation from me. This is why Michael’s legacy will not die.

This was my first time using Window’s MovieMaker.. and I was trying to do my best film job on my little Canon digital camera ..Enjoy!

Welcome to the new (texting) era

April 20, 2010

When I work out at the gym, I like to get a treadmill between 2 TVs. I like one screen to have CNN American Morning on and the other to have Good Morning America? Why? I feel like I’m getting both my national and local news all in one shot. Being that there is no sound, I don’t feel like one is interrupting the other. I can get the headlines I want to go look into further at work. So, the point of this was there was a CNN story this morning was about texting addictions and teens. 3/4 of 12 to 17 year olds have cellphones, up from 45 percent in 2004. That is RIDIC in my opinion. WOW!!

The average teen is sending 50 texts a day. Girls, obviously, texting more than boys. This was like ehh, whatever to me. But it made me think of the good old art of passing notes in class. Why was this the correlation? Because these 12-17 year olds are in school all day and thats what we did in school when it was my day. Sure, you u can be more stealthy sending a quick text in class, and its great, hopefully noiseless. But can you refer back to those texts 10 years later ?? Being the pack rat that I am, I still have some old school notes in a shoe box somewhere. Whenever I’m packing up to move I come across this box (which is sooo hard to part with) and I get nostalgic reading those letters. I laugh at the sheer trivial-ness and blasphemy of it all. You cannot do that with texts. These kids/teens are missing out. SERIOUSLY!!!

Flicking a match on my old yellowing papers will rid me of them quickly. Some of my friends don’t even know I have these letters. One day we’ll have a drunken ladies night, reminiscing over bad high school crushes and horrible ideas.

What phone/server is storing messages for years? What if you lose your phone. Also noted, texts are NEVER truly destroyed. If the cops/feds/super hackers reeaaalllyy wanted they could get incriminating texts. Someone may have saved the convo to email (*ahem Tiger’s hoes*) and they can come back to haunt you, but that’s not the same as these nostalgic letters.

The sad thing about this is that these frequent texters aren’t going to get any better as they get older. Don’t get me wrong, my blackberry is *almost* always in my hand and BBM is a way of life, but I still can socialize. I still know how to say ‘hello can I speak to —–” if I call somewhere vs “hey” from always calling cells. We’ve alll heard my gripes about people who communicate only via text. if you have my #. Use it

Tick Tock, The Body Rock

April 8, 2010

I really wanted to share this BBM conversation. BBM is short for BlackBerry Messenger (in case you’re NOT in the know)  This application is the sole reason young people are flocking to the Blackberry  lately, IMO. Anywho, this conversation was had between a former college classmate and myself. We’re both mid-twenty somethings and pretty amusing if I do say so myself. I think the convo started from a comment on someone’s BBM status message, and then it developed a mind of its own. **names have been edited for security reasons**

A: Me & boo boskie split b4 new years
A:   : *dueces* were chucked
B: Dam. Son that’s life. Ppl not makin the cut for 2010. Apps r in heavy rotation. Don’t call me. Ill call uuuuu! Lol
A: Lol yup yup
A: Suckas need not apply
B: Yea min experience is 3 yrs of commitment. And start investing in that 401k(arat) plan is a requiremnt after 1 full year of the signed contract. Company is progressively growing at an alarming rate and we need not waste time investing in non potential co-executive CEO’s.  Thank u!
A: Llmmmaaaoooo
A: Hilarious
B: But tru.
A: Very true
A: These dudes out here aint ready for a good woman though
A: They busy bs’ing
B: I knooooo. And the f’d up part about it is that we have a biological clock to attend too. Like wtf! If were not atleast close to engagment by 30 them its a wrap. Our time diminshes greatly.
A: I kknnooww :’(
A: As I approach my quarter century bday in 3 mths its all i can think of
A: Fuk this clock
A:  I’m late for everything anyway lol
B: Lmfao!!!!! Yooooo ur wild!!!! That was a good one

My FAVE parts of this convo were the application requirments and the idea that we have a clock to attend to. Whenever I read back on this convo, I crack up. I won’t say which one is me though. I can’t incriminate myself. I just can’t!

I think Dubb touched on this today that many women are surrendering their feminine qualities in lieu of masculinity and success in the workforce and their issues with submitting. (Check it HERE)  Many women are ignoring their ‘biological’ clock to pay attention to the ladder they need to climb. I believe that while it shouldn’t be your sole focus in life, it shouldn’t be completely discarded. Balance. I want to have a succesful career, but at the same time I want to be a stay at home mom for maybe the first 5 years. Or work but part-time or on a per diem basis. What’s so wrong with that? I’m not living in fear that my job (or any job) won’t be there. I plan (HOPE) to have my work speak for itself. I guess this would be different if I was, for arguments sake, someone in an entry-level position for my job. But that’s the thing, I don’t want just a JOB. I’d much prefer a career. Just like I’d much rather prefer a family to none. A real family though. Dinner is served at 7pm and I made it all from scratch boo, so let’s eat together and discuss our day. Is that too much? Does this exist? Do guys even want this anymore? I told my grandfather I wanted to meet a guy, fall in love, and get married and have babies. I said I want to meet a man who’s as into me as I am to him. He pretty much said “Get real, it doesn’t happen that way” #crusheddreams.

The Woman, The Gimmick, no Legend. . . .

April 6, 2010

Good day folks. I am the Man in the Moon (no relation). I will be a part-time contributor to Cleo’s cause of bringing sunshine to your everyday. She’s shining some of her light on me, so that I may shine some light on you. . . .cause isn’t that how the moon works anyway?

My first post will be about one of my favorite topics: Hip-hop. I love music, but hip-hop speaks to my soul. It’s in my heart. I love H.E.R. She lives in my lap. . .

That’s why I get upset when I see talent wasted. Not everyone can rap. It’s a combination being able to say the right thing, the right way, at the right time, to the right rhythm. . . .to the left, to the left. . . .

Case in point: Nikki Minaj

Umm, you're not selling sex. . . no, not at all. . .

Raw talent like this comes along once in a blue, but in a female who gets exposure: priceless. She can flow with the best of ‘em and piques my interest . . . plus, she doesn’t look like Grace Jones.

The problem is she’s a gimmick. Everything about her persona (now) is an elaborate front. Research her on YouTube and see that she used to be a straight-forward rapper. Raw talent. Kashi. . .

It’s disappointing because people still haven’t learned that rappers worth their weight in the CO2 that they emit don’t do gimmicks. Costumes are not necessary. Weird inflections and goofy faces are not needed to be a legend. Just be yourself.

Just a few modern examples of rappers who have left their mark without being a cartoon character: Fabolous, T.I., Kanye West (although he’s an a$$, he is himself at all times), DMX (he’s just effin crazy).

For females, I understand it’s hard to make it in a male dominated realm, but there are women who held their own without the mask: MC Lyte, Missy, Eve, Trina, Foxy, Lil’ Kim. Each of them seemed so genuine. Trina is about her paper, Kim is . . . loose, Eve is a tom-boy, Missy is strange, Lyte was a girl from the hood just trying to get out, telling her story to whoever would listen, and Foxy was def even before the hearing problem.

WHAT? OK!!!!!

It just seems to me that 18 months from now, people will still be rockin out to her stuff, but only if it comes on the radio. She’ll get no burn, No smoking sign.

To her credit, in an interview with Fadar Magazine, she says:
“I think it’s … important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again,” Minaj says. “Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see. People don’t even know what a female rapper does. We’re so not used to seeing it. It’s nonexistent in categories. I don’t know where I fit in the spectrum of rap yet; I think now I’m kind of proving myself, but before, people thought I was more of a sex symbol or wannabe sex symbol. That’s why I make the goofiest faces; I don’t want people to think I’m up here trying to be cute. I’m trying to entertain, and entertaining is more than exuding sex appeal. I don’t think that’s fun. I don’t find it fun watching someone trying to be sexy. It’s wack. I’m trying to just show my true personality, and I think that means more than anything else. I think when personality is at the forefront, it’s not about male or female, it’s just about, ‘Who is this weird character?’”

Ok, so she’s a goof ball, admittedly. . . But a Barbie though? You don’t want to exude sex, but you walk around naked and accentuate your, umm, assets. . . and boobs. So you’re entire style is a contradiction? In your old stuff, you were a borderline lesbian with an ill flow, nothing remotely goof troop about you. So which one is the real you? If this is you now, please lie to me and take off the wig. . .

If you keep this up Nikki, you will fall the way of Stagga Lee and D4L; it’s not that no one knows where they are now, it’s just that no one cares. . . .

Alice Smith concert @ HighLine Ballroom

March 30, 2010

Last week I had the great opportunity to go check out Alice Smith at Highline Ballroom in NYC. I’ve seen maybe about 3 concerts at Highline and its always a great time, I love it because tickets are almost always under 30 bucks. Anywho, I was GEEKED to see Alice Smith. Never heard of her? You need to.

People kept asking me to describe her sound, and I just found the best way to say it was eclectic. It’s r&b, bluesy, and jazzy all in one. She weaves many genres. Her voice is so dope to me. She has some range on her. I guess I’d say that if you like Amy Winehouse, you might like her. I dig her 100X more than Amy though, and I love Amy, so that says a lot.

Here’s some of her material:

Woodstock is one of my fav songs!

Fake is the New Real is also a must listen.

Her song Dream was featured on an episode of Entourage before. I remember watching and as the show was going off, I was like “wwaaiiit a minute, I k now this song!”

Here is my first ever  youtube video. It’s kind of loud and you might hear someone (not me *i swear*) singing in the background.

I cannot wait for her new album. She performed several songs off of it at the concert and it really sounds good so far.

Are you Ready for True Blood?

March 25, 2010

Thanks to dirtywhorelebrity.com for putting me on to this!

HBO is pushing 12-week viral campaign that leads up to the show’s third-season premiere on June 13. I knew about the June 13th premiere a few weeks ago. I remember tweeting it as SSSOOONN as I found out. I can’t wait to see more of these ads they are pushing. You know I’m all things True Blood.

Something Blue …

March 24, 2010

Today I have TWO myspace throwbacks for you.  One was a freestyle .. One was a writing prompt. I think I was a different person when I wrote these things. My thoughts don’t even flow like this these days.  I think I had a different focus back then. I also was surrounded by lots of creative people.

Here we go:

I was getting ready for work today and I had something in my head.. here is how it came out…

All right, I’m ready
my juices are flowing
creatively, I can
entice you
delight you
all around please
take you on a ride
like Coolio we’ll be
on fantastic voyage
hearts seeing places
our minds never imagined
cruising through mystical mirages
making magical memories
You and I can be
oh so sweet
dreamers dream days like this
fallacies fade away while
you examine my dichotomy
I told you baby
Everything’s real here with me
I’m your ultimate indulgence
why face reality?
Let’s tango to the beat
of my drum
sip some Jamaican rum
waltz across memories
of things you used to know
life begins anew once I’m through

Prompt: Write about a person who does everything “by the book”

Walking paradox
that’s me
with my
crossed-eyes
dotted tees
thinking I was wise
but all along
I was ill advised
following all the rules
yes, somewhere deep inside
i knew I was sold short
caged emotions
caged dreams
internally I was dead
had not known life
without limits
limit-less opportunity
fly with me
to a new destiny

March 11, 2010

FYI, I love Kid Cudi. I blogged about him when I first discovered him. And after a 2nd mixtape and an album I still rock out to him. I decided to re-blog about Cudi after seeing his 2nd video for his single, Pursuit of Happiness. The first video was eh, ok .. but this video is dope. I love the trippiness…

Are you yay or nay on it?

Kelis, please step away from the scissors!

I happen to one of the few American’s who is into Kelis … Or at least I used to be. I ADORED her album Kelis Was Here. In fact, many songs off that album are still getting heavy rotation. I actually BOUGHT that cd. I also happen to think Kelis is a really pretty woman. So this is why it pains me to see her looking so … BAD these days!! It’s like she is just trying wayyyy too hard to be unique.

Look at these pics, this is the Kelis I like:

(yes, I really took the time to create a collage of Kelis looks.. and I don’t have Photoshop!!! I won’t reveal how I made it happen lol)Kelis was HOT in these pics!! Exuding Sexxxyy!! But now.. just stamp a big old FAIL sticker on her!! I

The best picture on these is her Acapella promo shot .. What is with this dead possum hair? And why Grey?? People with  Grey hair don’t want it! Kelis, I need you to get on the good foot. ASAP!!I mean, is this what a bad marriage will do to you?? Say it ain’t so Joe !!

Cleo Reviews: Alice in Wonderland 2010

March 8, 2010

In case your new to this, you should know I have been looking forward to Alice in Wonderland for quite some time. Way back hen, in NVvember of 2008, i first came across the images on Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and began patiently waiting.. Then I came across these real scans .. and was in LOVE still. I watched every preview and eagerly anticipated my Imax 3D experience.

So this weekend I did it. I sat there in front of a row of 8-year olds and watched Tim Burton bring it. And I think it was brought! Some reviewers online said that it wasn’t good. I disagree. I think I had extremely high hopes for this movie, being the ultimate J.Depp and T.Burton fan. I know that because it was a Disney movie it couldn’t be as creepy as I’d like it, but it was good.

Storyline: We all know that Alice falls down a rabbit hole into Wonderland where she battle the Red Queen .. The story doesn’t change, except that in this adaption, Alice has been to Wonderland before. She’s 19 and not 6. Alice was my least favorite character. She was so … insolent. She looked great though. I totally adored the dresses they styled her in. This was my favorite:

alice in wonderland red dress uhm umbridge wardbrobe costume movie

Besides the fashion, She was just so blah. She didn’t add anything extra to Alice. The other actors carried this movie.

I loved Helena Bonham Carter in her role as Red Queen. I don’t understand why she had such a huge head. I do wish they would have elaborated on that. Johnny Depp was creepy. I don’t know how I want to describe his character. He definitely was ‘Mad’. His make up was flawless! And the Dance (you have to watch the movie to see this) was like WTF. I think that that was odd. I loved Professor Snapes Caterpillar. He was creepy. His voice is so creepy. Snape is a win in my book. Anne  Hathaway’s White Queen was good. Her role was small, but well played. Her gliding everywhere kind of irked me. I kept thinking, ‘Why is this B!tch gliding all over the place?” LOL. OH, and the Jabowokee? I thought he was really out of place for this movie. His ugliness was just soo .. un Wonderland. HE should have been more colorful and more of a slickster fighter. IDK .. I’m sure he’ll make a cool action figure though.

All in all this film was entertaining to watch. Not Tim Burton’s or Johnny Depp’s best. But good nonetheless. Now that I’ve seen the movie, I’m going to read the book, because apparently some critics out there are upset about this adaptation. I want to see what all the fuss is about.

Something New . . .

I like to get all my fashion and celebrity news in one spot. And when I’m not spending time on Dlisted laughing at people’s fashion choices.. I’m searching for a good site that can combine the two for me without being too blah. What do I then discover? Stylecaster.

This is important to me, because I don’t have as much time to get all my news links on Twitter (it really is like that sometimes..) so I need to quickly peruse while I’m at work and some sites are now blocked from my job ( :( ) .  My guilty pleasure is Celebrity news and fashion. I enjoy my serious news and world news but sometimes you just need strict entertainment. Stylecaster has celebrity  news (like all the cute Academy Awards dresses that I missed *bbm sad face*) and they also have just straight out Fashion Industry News (like that Solange & Zooey are the new faces of Rimmel London).

Do you know what I also found out on stylecaster? Gossip Girl returns tonight! I have missed this show so much. I don’t have much time for TV, but I NEEEEDDD my guilty pleasure of upper echelon NY teeny boppers. I need it! It makes me feel like I belong!

Also feel free to check out We are the Market for more fashion news.

This post was bought to you by your friends at  Stylecaster.com

Ever heard of Sexual Anorexia?

February 23, 2010

Sexual Anorexia? Sexerexia? This is a new medical condition apparently that can be defined “an obsessive state in which the physical, mental, and emotional task of avoiding sex dominates one’s life. Hmmm… Really? Thats odd, because the people who aren’t having sex usually want to have sex and the people having sex (or at least the ones I know) want MORE sex! But you have some people who are withholding it willingly? Hmmm..

I always thought using sex to control a relationship never worked? In the article it says that “Like self-starvation with food or compulsive dieting or hoarding with money, deprivation with sex can make one feel powerful and defended against all hurts.” Hmmm… In my mind, lack of sex makes one cranky and a downright bitch (this term does apply for men as well). Could that be all those control issues coming out? Having sex is like a way to cope with stress and problems. It’s like while your in the middle of some good sex nothing else exists, but you and the person and the moment. So, can you imagine using NO sex as a way to cope with stress and life difficulties? Um, NO. Sex is therapy. Yes, Robin Thicke had it right. Give me sex therapy!

How does one go about treating sexual anorexia? Do you suddently decide you’ve had enough of the drought and just go and bang the next person you see? How do you formulate healthy relationships without sex? I’m sorry, but you can’t have a serious adult relationship without sex at some point. You just can’t. That’s my belief and I’m sticking to it.

Cleo Reviews: The Wolfman

February 22, 2010

WolfMan!!

“Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright.”

It sounds like it should be scary, right? That’s what I thought too about the move The Wolfman. All the previews made it look devilishly creepy and exciting. So, you can imagine that I was very excited to be creeped out at the movies last night. I should have known something would be amiss when the lady in front of me gave us a stank face when we said we were going to see Wolfman. It was that face like Nina gave Carrie in the bathroom.. Yeah, that bad.

I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone, but I will say that while not a movie that kept me on my toes, it was gory. Blood gushing, guts on the floor goryness that some people enjoy. And that is what you need with a movie set in the last 1800s, blood and gore to spice it up.  I would definitely recommend waiting for the DVD or the HBO premiere of this movie. While entertaining its not worth the steep 10.50 movie price.  But now I’m curious to see the 1941 version. I have this thing where I need to see the original and the remake. I have a lot of originals to catch up on.

Benecio Del Toro is a great actor. He played anguished so well. Anthony Hopkins can never NOT be creepy. It’s just in  his blood. Emily Blunt was someone I never paid much attention to, and I probably still won’t, but she was good.
