You & Me must never part

May 19, 2010

Dubb sent me a GREAT read today about long distance love, I absolutely LOVEEEDD it .. my response: When am I gonna get my e-love? Of course I was joking (i think) but I started thinking of my e-life. And while I haven’t found the e-love of my life like others (barf barf) I have found an E-BFF!! yes, I’m talking about @Jess_Dubb, who I have to stop myself from referring to as Dubb IRL .. because my friends side-eye me like who the fuck is Dubb?? *does this make me weird??*

Me & Dubb’s relationship has progressed sort of like the couple who I read about today. First we were following each other on twitter, and through our tweets & @ replies discovered the other was hella cool. We also checked out each others blogs and commented on each other .. Eventually some emails were exchanged and then we became BBM friends. Now, our BBM relationship didn’t jump off right away .. there were some short convos at first. We were kinda feeling each other out I think, then it later  progressed to full on events

.. WAIT WAIT WAIT!!

Lemme back up .. there were some Google Wave 3somes with @HollywoodHeat (Google wave came & flopped huh??) and that was my first 3 as well (Dubb blogged it, check it out) ok .. so BBM progressed to daily BBM convos. We talked about so many different things, relationships, school, random shit, family, etc., Then we started Gchatting during the work day because I mean, we both work and we can pretend we are doing work if we are facing a computer screen (#imjustsaying).. and then it happened last week, We talked on the phone *shocked face* Idk, maybe Dubb didn’t like my phone voice, since she hasn’t called me since ?? (I kid, I kid, BBM suits me just fine!)

And a few weeks back I slowly started planning my trip to ATL this summer.. and Dubb shall be my tour guide .. and when she comes to the Dirty Jerz this summer, you best believe we shall play in NYC and have a blast. And we’re both looking at graduate schools on the West Coast. Me + Dubb on the strip w/ the sun on our backs blogging it up .. Yup .. sounds fun!

Maybe I got what I needed online, just not how I expected??

Cleo Rants: Gender Roles too enforced?

October 28, 2009

CleoSunShine7-hair-sticking-upI did a poll of friends to discuss whether Irish Spring was a male soap or a unisex soap. It started off as a friendly debate between someone, but I needed to validate one of our points. After all, someone has to be right.

Overall, most people only remembered the original scent of Irish Spring. You know, the big green or blue bar that will leave your wash rag tinted iwth that color. Those I will stand by the point made by the opposition in that those may be masculine, but others like aloe and micro clean are unisex. What man is ready for lemon scent? I think that Colgate (the distributor of Irish Spring) markets more for me because if they make the soap seem too girly, men won’t buy it. And you have to appeal to the larger market.

Men who use Dove or other “girly” soaps often deny it, or hide it. And why? Because of how people will perceive them?

Now think of this, how does this extend beyond the superficial of what we are talking about? Why do things always have to be assigned a gender? Their are “girly” cars and then “manly” cars. No one wants to be perceived more masculine or feminine than they actually are, correct? Is this more true for me? Are there more implications associated with a male for being deemed as too feminine?

Did it make me question myself when it was made a point that my soap was a masculine soap? Nope, not at all because I’ve used this soap since the dawn of time and am secure in my woman-ness. But would i want to be perceived as tom-boyish, probably not. Perception is the reality these days. Don’t be a victim of perception deception!

Cleo is informative! Credit Card Mistakes you should avoid!

October 22, 2009

I’m being very informative this week! I guess with all the things going on, you can never have enough knowledge on how to make your life simpler by avoid money problems! Today’s topic:

Credit Cards!

The bane of your existence if your under 30 and got those cards while you were in college. I know that I sometimes regret the day that I signed on that dotted line! Or better yet, that I had been better advised on credit card etiquette.

Yahoo! Finance had this great article on how bad are your credit card mistakes, you know what mistakes I mean: paying late or the bare minimum, missing a payment, or just having a slew of cards for no reason. They rated all these bloopers on a scale of 1-10 to give you an idea of how bad your doing! Now, some of these are no-brainers, but others are kind of shocking!

Most Shocking:

Debt Settlement Plans – they rank at 9.5 on the BBAADD scale! Did you know that while yes, this helps you pay less back to your debt, you also take a tax hit? Apparently, it counts as income during that tax year AND you credit will be tarnished! According to yahoo, next to bankruptcy debt settlement is the most negative thing you can do to your credit score! WOWZERS!

Cash Advances – these rank at an 8. I have yet to take a cash advance on a card, and from the looks of this, I won’t be anytime soon! What always scared me was the alarming higher interest rate on them, but apparently you also have NO grace period.

Not so shocking:

Maxing out your CC – HELLO! that isn’t rocket science. Every one knows that! On this scale it ranks a 7. This impacts your credit score, apparently pretty heavily because 30% of your score is based on “credit utilization” — the amount of credit you’ve used relative to the amount you have available!

Having too Many Cards – Guilty as charged! AT one point I had to get rid of a few because they left too much room for me to act up! While this doesn’t really affect your credit score from what the article says, it does say that it isn’t worth your wild to have all those cards because 1. you’re not getting enough value from the card to make it worth the high interest rates. 2. additional complications from additional bills and junk cluttering your inbox and 3. You’re likelihood of missing a payment is higher and the potential for identity theft!

There are a few more on this list, so I definitely think this is worth the read! Check it!

Fantasy Football: Rants & Tips!

September 1, 2009

I’m not an avid football watcher. I’ve tried over the years to get into it, but haven’t succeeded. In college I guess I would have considered myself an Eagles fan, but then after their failed appearance against the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX I haven’t considered myself a real fan. However, this year, in an effort to be more enthused about football (and able to actual use the TV at home on a Sunday) I’ve decided to
support the Eagles again. I feel that maybe I won’t fall asleep during the games if I’m actually rooting for someone! I also decided to root for them again for being the team to give Vick a chance. But that’s a story for another day.

Also, in my efforts to ‘enjoy’ football, I’ve become involved in Fantasy Football, which makes you care about the players. Last year, my rookie year, I played in 3 yahoo (free) fantasy leagues. I made the playoffs in all 3 leagues thanks to the help of all my male friends (go roomie!) This year, I’m currently at 3 leagues, with one being on FoxSports. This is the week that most leagues are having their drafts, and here are 2 of my 3 .. what do you guys think?

League 1. 8 Teams

fantasyroster1

I’m very happy with Peyton as a QB, although I was aiming for Drew Brees. But he’ll do. and although I’m not a Favre fan, he is pretty dependable as a backup. I also have T.O who, even though he’s a big baby, he’s a good player. Let’s hope all goes well on this team. I’d like to make championship this year!
League 2: 14 teams

foxsportsroster

On this team I have Peyton and the #1 wide Receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, but my other positions are weaker. I wasn’t paying attention and drafted Ray Rice much earlier than I wanted to, passing up a better pick. Either way, there is still the trade to work with.

I’m definitely more confident in team 1 than team 2 .. We have to wait and see what happens with League 3, which is the largest league I’ve ever been in with 16 teams.

For those rookie Fantasy Leaguer’s out there, I have a few tips that might help you out.

1. Check out the scoring in your league. Not ever league scores equally. Some offer points for return yards, which can lead to big points. This will also affect how you draft. If you notice in my league, I have a lot more players. Different leagues let you start a different number of positions each game as well.

2. In the words of Mr. B – Running Backs win games. Almost everyone drafts a running back first pick in a draft. Almost!

3. Always check your bye weeks. You don’t want your starters and your back-ups to both be out the same week. Very important.

4. Best available player listed is not always the best player. Don’t fall for the popular pick.

5. Things change quickly! Please stay current on sports news. Don’t be stupid like me and draft someone on the teams suspension list!

Gesticulation: Guilty as Charged

August 13, 2009

Today I realized I’m a hand gesture-er when I talk . Or rather, I’m a gesticulator…

It’s the kind of gesticulation where as if I’m talking about passing me the salt shaker I demonstrate the movement that a salt shaker does. Or when i talk of blowing in the wind I make a hand gesture that (to me) means blowing away. It’s a really odd quirk now that its been bought to my attention. Or when just talking about matters that don’t have demonstrable gestures I move my hands a lot. I’ve caught myself interlocking my hands when trying to avoid using gestures at work, and it makes me very aware of my hands.

I wanted to find out what this says about me as a person.  Some have said that hand gestures may imply that the story teller is involved with a story. Or that a gesticulator is  characteristicly artistic, an actor, or eccentric. Some have said that it can typically mean that you’re nervous. Much like people who have a nervous laugh (I definitely have that!)

There was an article, from 2005, on www.sciencedaily.com that said that hand gestures are linked to better speaking in a study of bilingual children.  I also found this tidbit on www.corticowhat.blogspot.com (they did the reserach and found it in a University of Chicago study )

According to a new study, talking with our hand is actually beneficial. This makes thinking easier. A research conducted by the University of Chicago revealed that people who moved their hands more frequently while talking have higher retentive memory compared with those who kept their hands still.

So maybe I’m not being offensive when I demonstrate to the waiter what a salt shaker is, maybe my brain is just really working over time to keep me smart? Maybe?

If anyone has more info on this please share. Where is a pyschologist??

Fame Whoring: Ray-J Reality Show…

January 14, 2009

What is wrong with TV? With Viacom in particular.. First they bombarded people with the Flavor Flav show, Flavor of Love. Then it was Rock of love, For the LOVE Of money. Fuck LOVE! OR at least the Viacom STD filled version of LOVE! I guess its really the production company, 51 minds productions fault, but damn Viacom keeps buying them!

The next real chance at love (ha, look @ that!) is for Ray-J, you know, “ain’t that Brandy’s brother” Ray-J, and its called…. “For the Love of RAy-J. Yes, these folks who get paid the big money are so creative. They are getting paid millions of dollars while the people responsible for teaching our children. WTF! This festival of famewhoring begins on Feb 2nd.. Basically a bunch of random chicks searching for reality TV fame are competing to be the “ride or die” chick for the dick that banged Kim Kardashian. (side note: I heard that the sex tape was ok… that his tool was noteworthy…).

This skanky version of the Bachelor will be filled with all types of Tom Foolery I’m sure. Ok, Let’s go over the names of the unlucky 14 clinic patients. Why do they need to give all these ho’s nicknames? And who the hell thinks of them? What ever happened to just being Nancy Sue and being calling you that.. Nicknames have to be earned, or at least to me. I hate when I just meet someone and they are like can I call you XXX for short.. I’m always like NO, you can call me XXXXXXX or nothing at all…

(pics can be viewed over on VH1)

1. Atomic Bomb-she kinda looks like Hoops from Flavor of Love season 1…

Celebrate Kwanzaa

December 28, 2008

I’ve been meaning to write about Kwanzaa since the day after Christmas, but all types of holiday stuff had me too busy. I can’t say that I actually participate in Kwanzaa, but I think that people have the wrong idea of what it exactly is. Some think of it as an alternative to Christmas when its not actually so. In fact, Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday versus being a religious one. Kwanzaa was “created” in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana Studies at California State University during the Black Freedom Movement. t is celebrated December 26-January 1. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili. Its thought to reflect the communities concern for cultural grounding and the unity and self-determination associated with the movement. Kwanzaa was created to reaffirm and restore our roots in African Culture-making it a reconstruction of African Culture.

Kwanzaa is said to represent a time of ingathering of the people to reaffirm the bonds between them. It’s also a time of special reverence for the creator and creation in thanks for blessings and the beauty of creation. It also represents commemoration of the past in pursuit of its lessons and in honor of its models of human excellence, a.k.a our ancestors. Additional first fruit celebrations include a time for re-commitment to our highest cultural ideals in our ongoing effort to always bring forth the best of the African cultural thought and practice, and a time for celebration of the good: the good of life, family, community, culture, the ordinary, the divine, the natural, and the social.

Kwanza is built upon 7 principals. I remember in elementary school during the Holiday play, which was every year no matter what grade you were in, we had to recite the seven principals of Kwanzaa. I remember BET used to have a Kwanzaa special. This was the old BET, not the crap as of late. The BET I remember had shows like Teen Summit. OH yeah! Back to the 7 principals of Kwanzaa,ne is celebrated each day of Kwanzaa.
1. Umoja: Unity
2. Kujichagulia: Self Determination (I just used to love saying this).
3. Ujima: Collective Work and Responsibility
4. Ujamaa: Cooperative Economics
5. Nia: Purpose
6. Kuumba: Creativity
7. Imani: Faith

I think Kwanzaa isn’t widely practice because no one is really taught about it. Sure, in class they glaze over it, but no one is instructing people on how to practice the ceremony. No one is helping kids light the Kinara or anything. Whereas we are socialized about Christmas from nearly birth. Even as a child you are instructed on the art of gift giving. From a kid you write letters to Santa, or Saint Nick however you want to refer to him. Christmas is truly lacking in its origins but people are still caught up in the commercialization of it. Going into massive credit card debt every year while other holidays such as Kwanzaa and even Hanukkahs (did I spell that right) are briefly acknowledged. Who’s fault is this? People or the businesses? If we weren’t inspired by all these shiny and technological they wouldn’t have us in this continuous consumer warp.

Fingerless Gloves…

December 23, 2008

I’m a busy blogger today! I have the emptiness of work to thank for that! Thanks Work! Anyway, I am on a quest for a pair of fingerless gloves. I don’t know what it is about them that makes me like them. I think its because they make me feel edgy. Either way, I really want a pair like those pictured above, with individual loops for fingers. However, I haven’t found them anywhere I’ve looked. But to be fair I’ve really only looked at Target, so I guess that nulls my point. Either way I want these so bad. But what I did find at Target was a “arm-warmer” which I’m thoroughly enjoying except for the print. They have a black background and multi colored heats and stars. They kind of look like the ones pictured below, but not as mature. They also don’t come up as high. I feel like and edgy 13 year old, but my hands are warm. I really hope that these fingerless gloves find their way into my Christmas stocking. You hear that ‘Santa’????? When I Googled fingerless gloves I came across this site, Coquette, that had a whole blog dedicated to them, which is where I got these images. Take a look at what they’ve posted. Damn, I really want some of these!! I really want some like the first one, but I’m not paying $ 55 dollars.. but someone else could.. I would like a color to match my scarf too.. OK, let me stop being picky..if someone gets me them I will love them no matter what color!

It doesn’t pay to be annoying…

December 22, 2008

I love New Jersey, but its official… I’m going to move to Michigan because it is now illegal to annoy people.  OMG, I think this is the coolest law EVER! And I HATE the law! HA!In Brighton Michigan the City Council approved a public conduct code Monday night which now can fine someone up to $500 for being annoying.  Does the money go to the city or to the person being annoyed? That makes a difference. what happens after several offenses, is there jail time? I think this is so cool.

Part of the bill reads(remember the SchoolHouse Rock things, a bill becomes a law, so this is still a bill):

It shall be unlawful for a person to engage in a course of conduct or repeatedly commit acts that alarm or seriously annoy another person and that serve no legitimate purpose.

It also states its unlawful for anyone to insult, accost, molest, or otherwise annoy a person in public.  So no more calling that cashier a stupid bitch or it will cost you more than poorly bagged groceries.  However, I do find a problem with the fact that they said the ordinance will be subjective and the call will be made by police officers.. BBOOO!! We all know the boys in blue are annoying as heck, they should be automatically fined at least once by default because sometimes, cops can just be downright jerks.
