This is excellent. I don’t know if you remember but back in January I published ‘ My (non) New Year’s Resolutions‘ and one of them was
“2. Write more – not just here. Writing in general, which is to include short stories, poems, papers, whatever the heck strikes me. Music Guides me and words inspire me.”
I’m giddy. So many good things happening. If you build it they will come tight? Oh so when the book comes out .. I’m hoping all of you buy a copy!!!
I woke up Sunday morning to a friends very sad Facebook status update. When I asked him what was wrong, he texted me information regarding these two young people. Mike was a member of his fraternity and he knew Nia through him. These senseless acts of violence are saddening. Later in the day I ran into several other people who knew the couple and they all were deeply devastated. I didn’t know them, and I was devastated. Death is never something easy to cope with, but when it happens to TWO young people with their lives ahead of them, it hits so close to home. I think EVERYONE can be touched by this story.
On April 3, a young couple was returning home from their engagement party and parking their new Honda CR-V, in Jersey City, New Jersey, when they were approached by two women and a man, who shot them both twice in the head, according to authorities.
Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said that the motive for these senseless murders was robbery and carjacking. Nia Haqq and Michael Muchioki were found dead near their car on Randolph Avenue in Jersey City.
Muchioki was a software engineer in Jersey City and Haqq was an associate producer for an affiliate of Nickelodeon in New York.
The suspects took Haqq’s engagement ring, Muchioki’s wallet, the pairs’ cell phones and the gift cards they had received at the engagement party, held at Delta’s Soulfood restaurant in New Brunswick, New Jersey, authorities say.
We had the opportunity to speak with Haqq’s best friend and maid-of-honor in her upcoming wedding, who would prefer to be called simply “Ty” at this time, as the murder case is still open. Ty shared with ESSENCE.com exclusive images of her best friend and her fiance, as well as a few tender memories of the two.
Friends describe the couple as inseparable, telling us that the two always traveled together. She was by his side at most of his black and gold Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity functions. Muchioki’s fraternity brothers have already created a website for the couple with over 2,000 views. The site proclaims their relationship “is the definition of love.”
Muchiokis’ friends remember him as the type who would often go the extra mile to lend a hand to someone in need. They also describe his great sense of humor; he would regularly update his Twitter account with funny quotes for his followers on the social media site. Haqq, we are told by her maid-of-honor, was the life of the party. Ty says she will miss speaking to Haqq every morning on G-chat. “She would always welcome me with a positive message,” shares her friend.
Muchioki’s funeral will be held on Friday, April 9 at Monumental Baptist Church in Jersey City at 10 a.m. Haqq’s funeral arrangements have not been confirmed.
Why oh why oh why!! Reasons like this and MTV’s Jersey Shore are why I’m sometimes ashamed to be from New Jersey. Who wants to weight 1000 lbs? Why is your LIFE goal to weight half a ton?? And why oh why oh why are people giving her shine? Why is she on GMA and radio stations and being offered a reality show?? If people stopped fueling the fires these idiotic people would stop these shenanigans. How does this woman, Donna Simpson, already hold the Guinness World Record for being the World’s Fattest Mother. How is it OK that it took 30 medics to deliver her daughter via C-section?? She can’t move more than 20feet before needing a break, but she wants to be fatter?? Can I smack this ho??
And I quote: “It might be hard though. running after my daughter keeps my weight down.” <— side eye.
And of course her 150lb lover encourages her to eat more, so he can cash in on her instant “fame”. How the freak do you freak that?? I’m saying?? Grossly disgusted.12,000 calories a day??? $750 a week for groceries? I’m sorry. Me and my roommate spend less than that in a month. WTF are you eating? iCan’t. I just can’t. She says people enjoy watching her eat? Who are these people?? What kind of amusement is it to watch someone shovel food down their throat?
Now I”m all for the #HCR bill.. but people like this who want to purposely ruin their lives should be denied. Why should money be spent trying to save your life when you get diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and other obesity related diseases when you don’t care? The person who I feel the worst for is her daughter. Poor little girl.
It’s been about 3 months since I made the move to Newark and I must say, its an experience. Chronicle my acclimation as I blog with GlocallyNewark.com to help show people a different side of Newark.
Want the overpriced NYC feel in NJ, check out my review of MiSaVi
Want more of the local diner feel? I also reviewed Top’s Diner (OMG can you say Strawberry Short Cheesecake? ) talk about YUM!!
I don’t want to bombard you guys with links, but do please check me out. It means a lot to me (especially if you comment!) LOL
My NY/NJ friends (and those in select other locations), I discovered a new dining establishment. Grand Lux Cafe. While its not new to everyone, its definitely new to me. And let me tell you, Oh my GOD, it was delicious. And we all know I’m a foodie so my approval means a lot! GLC is operated by the same folks as Cheesecake Factory, so if you enjoy CF, I’m sure you’ll love these people. The decor was very Cheesecake-esque, and the food equally yummy.
Their desserts are made to order, some taking up to 30 mins to prepare, so they suggest you order early. I had the upside down pineapple cake and my comrade (Kitty Bradshaw) had the New Orleans Beignets (I ate more of her dessert than mine!) and both were great. The Beignets come with three dipping sauces, but the strawberry & chocolate aren’t even worth your time. The best by far was the Jack Daniel’s sauce. When has anything with Jack Daniel’s in it tasted bad? The Beignet’s were like little Zeppoles covered in powdered sugar and bought to your table in a pretty basket. If Kitty wasn’t careful i was going to sneak her dessert home with me (sshhh don’t tell!). For our entrees we both had the Caramel Chicken, and let me tell you. I had a flavor explosion in my mouth. The flavors were phenomenal! There was chicken, mushrooms, which I hate, and red chili peppers. While it sounds like it might be heavy, it so wasn’t. The appetizer was CrispyShrimp & Chicken Thai rolls, with some dipping sauce that will make you go mmmm!
I’m telling you, this place was good. I wonder why there are so few. I’m getting hungry just telling you guys about it. Trust me this was good, Cleo recommends you see if there is one close to you & try them out. Prices aren’t even that steep. Caramel chicken was around $15 dollars and there were two servings on my plate, and we know its always good to be able to take some home. The only thing I wish I had tried was a drink. Next time I go, I will indulge in a Mimosa. I couldn’t this time because this recession has a foodista’s pockets burning
Unfortunately in NJ there is only one GLC and its in Garden State Plaza all the way in Paramus (for my Garden State Parkway people, that’s exit 163) . And there is only one in New York, and its not even in Manhattan (how the hell did that happen?) its in Garden City, NY. Where the heck is that? Upstate or Long island? They need to bring more of these around (like we really need more eateries, but if they were all this good, it would force the bad ones out of business-sorry bad restaurant owners!).
So, back before Christmas I blogged about the Campbell family from New Jersey who had beef with ShopRite over a birthday cake. A brief recap is that these idiots named their children after the Nazi Regime. They have a son named Adolf Hitler Campbell, 2 daughters named JoyceLynn Aryan Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Campbell. Well today, I was directed to a Yahoo article that said that these children have been removed from the home-a home decorated with Swastikas and other Nazi paraphernalia. I couldn’t have been happier. These people are fucking nuts! And this is what happens when you bring all this unnecessary attention to yourself. The article doesn’t state why they were removed because its against policy, but it should say because the parents were idiots! They should have let ShopRite have their stance and move on. But NO! They thought they would garner some attention and probably eventually lead to a lawsuit.. FOOLED YOU!
For the sake of the validity of the removal of the children I hope that the Division of Child & Family Services (DYFS) has a better legal basis than the fact that they hold blatant racial beliefs and named their children cruel names. Everyone always wonders what is really in a name. A name is everything. It is the first thing people see on a piece of paper when your applying for a job or college or even a loan. I have joked that I need to go by my initials and my last name because I feel that my name isn’t the best name out there, and we can deny it all we want-people believe in stereotypes. The name Lashenique Thomas will get over looked no matter how qualified she is for things… so imagine the shit Adolf Hitler would have went through…
I really am scared for what awaits people in 2009. I say this because people aren’t nearly as nice, forgiving, or even understanding as they once were-myself included. Everyone is driven by money, rage, or sex.
Two crazy things happened to me over the past two days, and I’ve only left my house about 4 times this week. So that means a lot to me. And I know that sometimes I’m in my own world but these things just happened in too close of succession. The first bares no need to be mentioned in lengthy detail, but the end result was a store (KRAUZER’S DELI) called the policia on me because he gave me the wrong change. Now, I didn’t realize it until maybe an hour later, soI went back to try and rectify the situation. The young man decided to call the cops vs. calling his manager to handle the situation. The cops come, and after a few minutes of debate he gives me my money. why would he rather call the police than the manager? I don’t know. Why did he feel a 5’5 girl in fingerless gloves was a threat? I don’t know. I didn’t go in there screaming and yelling in an ignorant manner either. I stated the facts, which could have been verified by counting the register. This story is just the catalyst for my feelings.
Today, I’m driving back to the store (yes, the same deli) to get some newspaper to wrap my dishes for my impending move. So on my drive I get stuck in little bit of traffic. At one point the traffic moves about 3 feet. I did not let my foot off the break to move 3 feet when there are about 25 cars between me and the light. So the car behind me beeps out of aggravation for being 2 feet further away from their destination. So, in my wtf are you thinking mode I flip them the bird. Jersey drivers know that one of the standards of driving here is being able to have a quick bird finger, LOL. Said driver flashes me a few times in broad daylight. So I continue on my quest to get my papers. When I pulled into the parking lot at the deli the car swings around the corner into the parking lot too and pulls up near my driver side window. She rolls down her window and just starts yapping, so I roll my down out of courtesy for what she has to say. She proceeds to tell me i didn’t have to give her the finger. I say to her
“It’s not that serious it was 3 feet. You can ruin your brakes continually stop and releasing but I’m ok. ”
Her: “it doesn’t matter. I’m trying to be nice about this, someone else would come and snatch you out the car.”
ME: “well it obviously does matter if you felt the need to drive over here and tell me.”
So after she continues to verbally assault me, I roll my window back up while she’s talking, eventually she gets the point and drives away. Now, I know that sometimes I can be an asshole especially when provoked. I probably shouldn’t have given her the finger, but I don’t take kindly to being beeped at for no reason. If I was driving recklessly, by all means beep at me. But for not moving 3 feet-lady relax. But this all got me thinking about just how mean. selfish, and even intolerable people are these days.
It used to be a thing where it was people who lived in bigger cities had a certain edge to them, but I’m starting to feel that even people in not so big cities are being driven to the edge. I mean over the holidays we heard so many stories of rage, deceit, robbery, and murder. HELLO! A man dressed as Santa shot up a house and set it on fire. These are definitely signs of troubled times! Is there a way to help people realize that you can be skeptical and cautious of others with compromising your manners and common courtesies? By no means am I saying that I am the paradigm of civility, because I get tired of being nice to people who don’t deserve it at work. But I do try to be nice to all the people I encounter-the gas station attendants, pharmacists clerks, and food servers. Even if that person isn’t up to my personal standards of good customer service, I find no need to be rude unless provoked. Hopefully 2009 is a better year for peoples communication skills, but honestly is that possible? Less money is in circulation these days, and less money means less happy people.
Has everyone heard about the proposed taxes in New York? I don’t live in New York, I do go there often, as does any person in Jersey, so I feel some of these taxes will affect us here. First let’s just say that New York is already super expensive. Just buying a simple bagel and orange juice can be about 1-2 dollars more expensive than in Jersey. Fast Food chains are expensive and let’s not even talk about the cost of drinks in the club. It is downright high way robbery. But dammit if the city is a fun place to hangout!
Well, recently Governor Paterson, who has taken post after Spitzer was removed because of his illicit call-girl activities, has proposed almost 88 new taxes to make up 18 billion dollar deficit in the New York budget. The state of NY was so reliant on funds from Wall street, but now that those execs have caused their own demise us poor folk must pay. If that isn’t the resounding theme of 2008.
Basically he wants to impose a “digitally delivered entertainment” tax which could include iTunes downloads and services like NetFlix among others. We will herein refer to this as the “iPod tax.” He also wants to tax soda and non-nutritional beverages (think beer and wine :0) or any beverage that is less than 70% juice. This will be referred to as the “obesity tax.” There used to be a tax break in NY on clothing that cost under $110, but he wants to axe that. Additionally he proposes a tax on cable and satellite TV and a Taxi tax. Wow, lots of taxes on the average New Yorker.
THere have been lots of outrage regarding these taxes, saying that he wants to nickel and dime the average person, versus taxing the people who have the money, i.e. the now derelict Wall St. execs who despite the collapse still received thousands of dollars in bonuses. I have a few things about this iPod tax and obesity tax. There have already been polls released that say that people aren’t going to download less despite being taxed more and I can’t say I blame the. With more and more things becoming increasingly expensive people need a way to entertain themselves, and buying actual cds is just kind of dated. And they don’t last as long. IF you really like a CD and you play it a lot it can get scratched and damaged fairly quickly. You can not scratch a download. I do question how will the regulate this? Can a NY’er just cross over th e tunnel and make their download at a Starbucks in Jersey to avoid the tax? this would increase transportation revenue, LOL. NO, but seriously, how will they? For some NY’ers it is very very easy to get to Jersey via the Path or the NJ transit. Granted it will cost them, but is it worth it?
Obesity tax? Harsh name, but really is this necessary. Soda and other non necessity food items are already taxed, at least in NJ so how much more are you going to do it. I read an article on the NYtimes that said that this is really a benefit to people, just like the smoking tax, because despite the health risks people won’t stop until its money involved. Hmm.. that made me think a lot about the health risks associated with drinking. The tax won’t go to diet sodas, which can be more harmful than regular soda due to the affects of that devil known as aspartame. How does he see diet soda as a necessity? Seriously? ICK. Do I think this will cause people to cut down on liquid calories? No. I think that more people will buy in bulk. It will be cheaper to buy a 12 pack and bring your own soda vs. buying a 20 oz. every day. People are not going to give up habits like that easily. I say maybe 2 % of the the NY “Coke crew” (yes I made that up, that is for people who have to have their Coke with every meal, we all know someone like that) will actually cut back on their soda drinking.
My only question is… how does this affect the cost of a Non-Fat Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks in Penn Station??
I’m ashamed to say that these people are from the great state of New Jersey, but its true. But this just goes to show how one small state can have such a variety of people. These people should move and never come back. And as much as I don’t want to give them any more “fame” by blogging about them, this is just nonsense. I feel that people of this sort will use any opportunity to promote their agenda. In this case, they might as well just stamp on their foreheads we’re racist bigots.
Heath and Deborah Campbell have named their three children interesting names: JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell, Honszlynn Hinler Campbell, and Adolf Hitler Campbell. Why? Because they are idiots who shouldn’t be allowed to raise children. OK, maybe that’s harsh but anyone who glorifies the Holocaust deserves to be forced to live in the torture that was forced among millions of people. These names are doing the kids a huge disservice, it may not seem so now, but wait until they begin to learn and read about the origins of their names from a viewpoint other than their parents. These backwoods idiots made headlines because a ShopRite supermarket refused to personalize a cake for the young Adolf’s birthday. Shoprite offered to make a cake leaving them room to make their own inscription, but the family turned that down saying they don’t understand what the fuss is about? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?? It makes me angry that they are acting oblivious, as if they don’t know the history behind the name. No matter how much you try to say that Hitler is the past and you’re son won’t be that way, it doesn’t mean people will forget the origin of the name. I would have refused them service also, citing just as Shoprite had, that it is inappropriate. Guess where they went to get it done? WALMART!!! This is why I don’t support that moral less company!
A lot of ShopRites, like the one I worked at in high school, have owners that are Jewish. I don’t know about this particular store, but I’m sure the owners are standing by their staffs decision to not decorate this cake. The fact is that, this is a family that glorifies what the Nazi party stood for. In the article they have a gallery where the man has a swastika tattoo and another on his car. He has them in every room of his goddarn house! No, its not illegal, but you can’t expect people to share and embrace this with you.. He was asked by the NJ Dept. of Child and Family services to remove the swastika from his car because it could endanger the children. Someone might see it and want to kill them. I can see why. This is more than having an interest in German history.. this is following a certain mindset. This is a case where the court should interject, like they did with the kid who’s name was like Number 7 Bus Shelter… WTF…You want you kids to have unique names? So do people who name their kids Tashadiniya and they get ridiculed and looked down as “ghetto” all the time.
I kind of feel sorry for the poor kid. He is stuck with these dumbasses as parents. I hope he learns enough to not grow up in their same mindset. I mean, they said they aren’t racist but don’t believe races should mix.. how is that NOT a racist? I mean, here are two individuals who don’t work who have three kids. WTF. These people are the reason why we are in a recession. My NJ Tax dollars are being used to feed your hate? OH NO! Hopefully they realize that no good job is going to hire someone named Aryan Nation or Adolf Hitler. It is true, names get discriminated on, it happens all the time. I think the point of the article in the Express-Times wasn’t to highlight the family but to show that the company was upholding their moral standing, which is rare sometimes. It is courageous to take a stand like they did and I applaud that.
While we are on the topic of TV, this is something DVR could have prevented! OK, I’m joking with that because this is slightly sad
A 72-year-old New Jersey (not the man in photo) man stabbed his friend 28 times after she took the remote. Now, when I first heard this story, I was at my desk at work and my co-worker said that aloud. My initial response was, “what the hell, how can you not out maneuver a 72 year old, how old do you have to be.” Then she proceeded to tell me that the lady was 63. So she was pretty old herself. But let me say, my grandmother is 66 and she could dodge someone trying to stab her. She does not play that! I bet this was a blossoming romance that ended over a debate between People’s court or Judge Judy. I feel sad for victims family, and even for the old man, he’s 73 and going to face jail time-at least 15 years for aggravated man-slaughter. Damn, maybe he should be on People’s Court pleading for a suspended sentence to an old people’s home. I mean, he might have a mental illness, he said that he doesn’t remember stabbing her but that he knew he attacked her. He could easily have dementia. Damn, he probably forgot he was at her house, watching her TV and snapped. You aren’t even safe at home anymore.
In case all of you Jersey folks out there don’t know, its now going to cost us more to travel in state. The last two times I traveled on the parkway I saw signs that the fare would increase on December 1st. If you don’t know, some tolls on the Garden State Parkway are 70 cents and some, in less traveled areas of the parkway that you pay going both ways, are 35 cents. Well now those 70 cents tolls are going to be 1 dollar and those measly 35 cents tolls will now run us a clean half dollar. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am upset. I don’t like having to pay to drive. Gas is going down for who knows how long, and now tolls are up. We just can’t win. Driving can be such a nuisance. For those who travel the turnpike that has went up as well. The average 22 mile trip is going up from 1.25 to 1.70.
I can understand the need to raise tolls, but it doesn’t mean that I am happy. New Jersey is in a serious deficit, and Gov. Corzine has to make some changes. This changes will generate lots of revenue for the state, and I guess its better to do this than raise taxes. In an article I read online and in the Rutgers University Daily Targum it said that the revenue earned from these increases will be used towards paying bonds sold to finance past construction projects and to pay for more than 8 billion dollars in new work. New work is said to include 3 new lanes on the New Jersey Turnpike between exits 8A and 6. They also want to add an additional lane on the Garden State Parkway in the Toms River area. Their is also talk of a possible discount planned for EZPass drivers. However, after review of the discount proposed on the NJ Turnpike Authority website, it doesn’t really benefit people who have jobs. The only time the discount is offered is during “off peak” hours. Off peak hours are between 6:30 pm-7am and 9 am-4pm. Weekends aren’t even considered off peak. Bastards! They also have a plan to offer discounts to folks who drive “green” cars. With all the changes and increase in 2012 like they propose eventually it will cost us 4.7 cents per mile on the Parkway and 11.5 cents per mile on the Turnpike. Damn tolls…
So, this weekend me and my friends hit the strip club. And we went to a strip club where girls strip because:
1. Drinks are cheap.
2. Things get really raunchy at the other kind (or so I’ve heard)
3. Drinks are cheap.
Now, if you are in strip club and your sitting there at the bar or around the “stage” you should tip. It’s only fair. For those that don’t go to strip clubs often I guess you don’t know how the work. Well, the ones I’ve been to usually work this way: Girl dances around or on the pole depending on her skill set. After she’s done there she makes her way around the bar/floor and gets her tips. It isn’t like on StripTease where Demi Moore got her own introduction and personal attention while the other girls fade to the background.
So this particular club, Club Risque, was decent. Drinks were cheap and it wasn’t crowded. Me and my girls take our seats at the bar, order a round of drinks and watch the girls work. So, I’m not really into the whole having to put the dollars on them, I kinda just like to hand them the dollar and keep it moving. I comment on their outfits or shoes and their pole skills with the girls. Well, this one girl was….
…
…..
PREGNANT!!
A pregnant skripper! I was taken aback. I started looking for knife and gunshot wounds. I have heard that its hard to quit, but damn. Sometimes you gotta give that up. So. I had it all made up in my mind that I wasn’t tipping this girl. I could not support working in a strip club while your pregnant. So I tried to keep my head down, focusing on my drink when she came over. But I made a mistake. I had my singles sitting near my glass. So she walks right over there and smiles and tries to chat, forcing me to tip her. I was guilted into tipping her. How dare she use her pregnant belly in that way! To make sure I wasn’t just being overzealous, I asked the bartender was she, and she didn’t know. But the head bartender girl came over and confirmed that yes she was. She was only staying until she’s showing. I’m like um, “HELLO!! I see her baby bump very evidently.” Ghetto ass! It reminded me of Ronnie & Trix from Player’s Club. How no one wanted Trix to dance for them because she was the proverbial ghetto stripper. I wonder why so many people glamorize stripping. I guess it’s fine if you want to dance around on stage, but the whole talking to people, having them put their hands on you is just gross to me. I would feel like a piece of meat, which I kinda am if that’s what I’m doing.
For those who don’t know Ronnie & Trix.. skip to around 4:15
I am going to dub this duo the “North Jersey Ninjas” since Shinobi Warriors doesn’t work for me. I wonder if they received training watching Ninja Warrior on TV? That show really tests people physical strength. Anyhoo, here we have two ‘modern day’ ninjas, Tadieusz Tertikiewicz and Jesse Trojaniak, of Clifton, NJ. Side note, despite what people say New Jersey is a pretty damn popular state. It is mentioned in damn near every movie and we produce many great talents, none of which include these two. The mission of the North Jersey Ninjas is to rid the area of drug users and dealers because they feel it is their destiny to stop their “impure activities.” Talk about a “war on drugs.” These two prepared letters to leave at the houses of individuals they singled out, what measures they used to single them out, who knows. The letters stated”
“Shinobi will stop your cruel and sadistic intentions with justified yet merciful force.”
One of these letters had been delivered to the 16-year-old girlfriend of 20-year-old Tertkiewicz. I guess he dumped her because he wasn’t fond of her weed problem. I wonder if they have a problem with alcohol abuse because that can be pretty vile and sadistic. Drunks are usually more violent than crackies. Anyway, the North Jersey Ninjas have been apprehended and charged with weapons possession and Tertkie was charged with harassment too for sending his ex that letter I guess.
Its weird to have a modern day vigilante group who wants to stop people who have “committed the sin of passing impurity.” Who does uphold purity these days? Is it passing impurity for doctors to push perscription drugs for that’s that could be cured more naturally? Isn’t it impure of the meat industry to inject the food we eat full of hormones and then abuse the animals? Or to douse our produce with insecticides? Isn’t war impure? I mean, seriously, Ninja Vigilantes with a vendetta against drugs of all things! Its not like drugs aren’t a huge problem, but I don’t think threatening drug dealers is the way to get them to stop. They also stated in the letters, “wind guides us to those of impure heart and intent.” I wonder if they were guided in the direction of President Bush? Did they mail him a letter to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue because I know his heart is impure. What is up with all these crazy groups-you have the Westboro Baptist Church making a statement against Bernie Mac’s funeral all in the name of Christ. I thought the last vigilante group was the Klan, but even they are making a comeback. Well people, you should just remember, “the road to hell was paved with good intentions.”
Dope. Crazy. Perfectly Imperfect. I'm not the best writer and probably not the worst either, but I am happy while doing it. Stick with me and you'll never be bored! I mean, maybe you won't and maybe you will....
