Nine West, Elegy.

September 4, 2008

Remember back when Tim Allen had that show Home Improvement and his show inside the show was called “Tool Time?” And Al was his co-star.  I never watch Home Improvement on Nick @ Nite because I’m upset they don’t show A Different World but I do sometimes watch Family Matters… and maybe Roseanne.  I love  Roseanne’s family’s white trash-ness. She loves it.  I love it because that was a real white family from the midwest-they weren’t all wholesome or cheesy.  They had real fights and real issues. Granted some characters were extremes (Sandra Bernhardt’s Nancy) but they dealt with real personalities in my opinion.

I don’t want to bore you with memories of my Nick @ Nite adventures, I wanted to show the world my newest shoe obsession.  In case you didn’t read about SLASSSH by Steve Madden I am an admitted shoe whore.  I can’t help it.  I try to not shop and stay away but they find me.  I am in love with these boots by Nine West, called Elegy.  Now, I think I mentioned how I have logs for calves so to find a boot that comes up to my calves AND zips up is a feat.  So I actually took the time to measure the area around my calves and see if it was OK with this boot.  And it is. So now i want them even more.  In this beautiful gray color because black looks too biker chick for me.  And while I love to look as biker chick as the next girl, I do have my limits.  Now, the ones I want I have found online for around $100 even though I found the black ones for $35 I still want the grey.  If anyone knows of a place where I can find them for cheaper let me know.  For now, they’ll stay on my wish list because I’m placing myself on a strict.. I mean STRICT budget for the next few months… and when I saw strict I mean it!!!!

Fatherhood Commercials

August 26, 2008

I love this commercial everytime I see, because its just so cute, without being too cheesy like those say no to drug public service announcements.  I caught myself sitting on the couch one day singing, “those boys are much too much.” I like the fact that this shows a father daughter relationship, because those relationships are extremely important.  Especially for black women, too many of us don’t have father figures at home.  I think that all girls; white, black, asian, indian-whatever their ethnicity need strong male role models.  It is these relationship that shape the relationships that we have with males for the rest of our lives.  You find some women looking to fill a fatherly void and you sometimes wonder, “Well, what is she doing with him,” or sometimes you see the girl searching for it by bed hopping, looking for that male to take care of her.  We see these tarnished relationships reflected in different ways every day.  The same is with boys.  Many boys need to have a male role model to show them how to fix things, how to be a man.  Instead of having to grow up with this innate sense to be the “man of the house.” Like Janice Huber (The first Aunt Viv from Fresh Prince of Bel Air) said in her recent Essence.com article “I feel like there’s so much decadence in the world right now. I feel like our children have really been corrupted with sex and violence and the need to fit in [by adopting] the whole thug-wannabe, gang-wannabe [mentality]. The role models out there are really dangerous,” this is true.  She is not speaking from a place of older versus younger.  I am young and I believe this.  So I try to be a role model for my younger cousins.  But I do find it kind of sad that there has to be an initiative to promote fatherhood.  It is sad, and frankly appalling.  I mean, even like Barack Obama said during his fathers day speech, “any fool can make a baby.” And this goes for women too… any one can give birth, but it takes a true soul to stand up and be a parent.  On the website for the National Fatherhood Initiative I saw that they were more than just public service announcements.  They offer a variety of tools and resources for fathers in various settings. They had community based programs, healthcare programming, school programming military programming, corrections and christian based programming along with information for balancing work and family.  I wonder how many people, who have children, have seen those commercials and really visited their website.  It makes me no difference because I don’t have a child, but if I did…and they had the motherhood initiative, I’d check them out.

Check them out here.

My Movie Review

Disclaimer: This is solely my opinion and I don’t represent any one elses views or have any facts to back up my opinion…

So this weekend I went to see Jack Bauer, I mean Keifer Sutherland in the movie Mirrors.  And I have to say that over the past few years I have lost faith in scary movies.  So many have been . . . whack for lack of a better word.  I can’t pretend that there haven’t some jewels:

  • The Saw series
  • The Hills Have Eyes
  • The Ring (only the first one)

But so many have been remakes of past movies or of popular Asian movies.  I mean, movies in general have just lacked any sparkle of creativity.  in the past 5 years there have been more remakes than original screenplays and more movies from comic books, cartoons and TV shows than successful blockbuster films, but yet actors are steadily making more and more money.

Anyway, I went on Saturday night to watch Mirrors, which I suspected was a remake of an Asian film and after some research yesterday found out it was, and it was good. The story features a down on his luck cop who takes a night job at an old department store. He begins to realize there is something fishy with the mirrors, and sets out to find out what is up before his family is destroyed or he is killed like others before him. Now, I enjoyed this movie but I still had several questions that I don’t want to ask in fear of giving too much away, but I am going to ask some.  I wonder were the “mirrors” selective in who they chose to harass? And there are some questions I have about the ending, I mean how did he get there if  . . . .?? And Is he dead or alive? I know they left it open to have room for a sequel, but dammit I need my questions answered. And I mean seriously, an abandoned burned-down department store in the middle of NYC is straight unrealistic. First off, Macy’s Herald Square would have put them out of business and secondly new yorkers aren’t much for Saks has the luxury game on lock. And why were they not rebuilding, if someone admits to arson the insurance would cover the damages. I’m jus saying-logistically I saw error in that. And then why hire patrolmen to protect burned merchandise?? Not well thought out or they cut those scenes.

As far as the acting-Keifer Sutherland is Jack Bauer in everything that he does. He would need to take a role like Nathan Lane in the birdcage for me to not see the Jack Baueresque-ness of him. Paula Patton as his wife wasn’t horrible, but in typical horror movie fashion she was wishy washy. Long periods of doubt followed by belief when she needed it. The son, he didn’t say much but he didn’t need to. There is always that one child who bonds with the alien/demon/creature and helps it- that’s him. And the daughter, I knew who she was from the CW show “the game.” She plays the biracial daughter of two main character and alas here she is also playing a biracial daughter.I guess she’s a good actor for a kid.  I find it hard to be harsh to child actors…

Overall, I don’t regret spending the cash or the time to see this movie. It had me jumpy.  Had the appropriate number of gory scenes to satisfy that blood craving you need with a horror film and the effects weren’t horrible.  As long as they don’t go shuffling around the cast I guess I might.

An introduction is necessary: Slasssh

I don’t know if everyone knows, but I have an addiction: to shoes.  Preferably, heels that are 4 inches or better.  Three and a half is nice, but four is wonderful.  Anyway, once upon a time in a land I call “internet heaven” I purchased a pair of shoes from Steve Madden online.  Ever since then they email me with new arrivals and clearance sales and the likes.  So when I checked the email today, I saw that they have these shoes available for pre-order.  I introduce you to SLASSSH.  At first I was like wtf, and open toe boot. but the more I looked at them I saw the potential – Me, in a skirt showing a little leg, hair blowing in the wind.  Oh yes, it was magic.  OH, and I love the platform look in my heels, its a necessity.  Makes for much more comfortable shoe wear.  I also love a low boot because I have HUGE calves, so it is hard to find boots that will fit over the logs I call legs.  Damn me for having perfectly sized feet, LOL!!! Now, I don’t believe in paying full price for anything.  So I will NOT be pre-ordering anything.  I will wait and see if they get sent to Macys and take advantage of my nice coupons or when Steve email’s me some new coupons for 10-20% off.  I love SLASSSH but I love my sisters Sale and Clearance even more.  So guys, these are on my wish list along with a few other choice shoes.

Broadway Revival

August 21, 2008

So yesterday while I flipping through my September issue of Essence magazine while working out, I came across a one-page article about India Aire starring in a revival of Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.” I was so thrilled I damn near fell off the machine.  I personally have not read the book, but I have heard how inspiriting it is, and what I have read from Ntozake I have loved.  She is phenomenal.  I think I am going to grab a copy of this book from amazon the next time I purchase a book.  I have to keep an eye on this production because I absolutely  have to see this. I really wanted to catch the all black revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof but I missed it, so if I miss this I will kill someone.  I tried to google information, but couldn’t find any information dated after July 30.  All the information said that India Aire’s debut will be postponed due to lack of funding.. I am praying that this comes to Broadway or off-Broadway because I need this in my life.  For those who don’t know, “For Colored girls…” was First produced off-Broadway, the play soon moved onto Broadway at the Booth Theatre and won a number of awards, including the Obie Award,  Outer Critics Award  and the AUDELCO Award.

Granny’s Got a Gun!

August 20, 2008

Granny ain’t no joke!! I swear my grandmother would do something like this! This here is Leda Smith of Point Marion, PA and she don’t play. Leda was home chilling, probably watching reruns of Golden Girls on Lifetime or Judge Judy when someone broke into her house. So Leda went and got her gun(a .22 caliber revolver), which she had because there had been a string of robberies in her area, and busted that two-bit burglar. Wait! It doesn’t stop there! She then forced HIM to call the police while she kept him in her sights! She said, “I said, ‘what are you doing in my house?’ He just kept saying he didn’t do it.” Yeah, you didn’t do it, but yet you’re here underneath the head of my gun. I’m sure Leda fell for that one. The kid who did it was 17, this is what every teen delinquent needs-some hardcore old lady punishment. This particular kid will be facing criminal charges for attempted burglary and related offenses in juvenile court.

I can just picture this scene in my head. (this is how it goes, there is not truth here that I know of)

Leda in her floral armchair hears a noise upstairs in a room. She walks to her bedroom and grabs her gun, and rolls up on him real soft like. She points the gun at his head and says, “What are you doing in my house.” He freezes and holds his hands up and kinda whimpers, “I’m sorry.” So Leda then proceeds to tell him, get on the floor. And he drops to the floor lying on his stomach. And she takes her Dr. Scholls and then kicks his legs apart and kinda has him laying there eagle style. She then reaches for her nearest phone and hands him the phone. “Call 911.”

“Lady, I’m sorry can I please just go.”

“Boy you better to me, I said call.”

“Please, I didn’t do it. I swear it wasn’t me.”

She kicks him in the groin, “Call!”

“I’m sorry,” he says while crying.

Granny then holds the gun still on him while he tells the dispatchers what the situation is while crying. When they get there she tells them, “It was exciting. I felt like I was in a Chuck Norris movie.” Ok, she didn’t really say that, but she did say it was exciting.

Sandcastle Disco Baby!!!!

August 19, 2008

I  may be one of 5 people who are looking forward to Solange’s album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams. I loved the first single, “I Decided” and I just saw this video this morning, and I like i too. In certain parts of the video you REALLLLLYYYY see the family resemblance between her & her ever famous sister Beyonce. I love how Solange plays on the shit people talk about her, in the video she’s singing atop a can of Solange, Can I sing soup… amusing. And she has this freestyle out to the industry, “Signed Sincerely” which I really like. So, she has found a fan in me… And because of that, on August 26th, I will download her album with glee… I mean, I did think of pre-ordering it at amazon.com because its like 7.00…

Oh, and I was totally loving the video until like the last minute, where she is wearing this yellow green frock that looks like Big Bird’s feathers with a splash of Gatorade. Horrible!!! she needs to fire her mother as her stylist!!

(Th)ink about it!

August 15, 2008

**Image Removed**

I was browsing online looking for some cool political cartoons because I saw one by the exit I usually use at my dreadful job. And in my online search I found this one, which made me laugh, which is what a comic strip should do or at least inspire thought. This one is drawn by Keith Knight and his strip is called (Th)ink. Its supposed to tackle the social and political issues impacting communities of color. Ok, cool, I thought he’d have some dope stuff. But i was a little disappointed in what he had on the site. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I could see he was talented, but I just felt that he wasn’t taking an original enough spin on things. But this one here, I liked. I felt like it was funny when I saw the Biggie v. Tupac issue and the facebook v. myspace one. And I said these are issues that aren’t just for communities of color, but for youth. And everyone says how valuable and important the “youth” vote is. Although no one who plays with Bratz dolls is voting or at least I hope so. But what or who the hell is Appolonia and why is it compared to Vanity?? Am i being an idiot, because when I thought of Appolonia I thought of Prince and when I saw Vanity I thought of Vanity Fair magazine… Wrong correlations?? maybe…
