HBO’s new series True Blood stars Anna Paquin and a few other people who i don’t know, but so far its pretty good. It’s based on a series of books by Charlaine HarrisI have watched all four episodes and each one has been pleasantly surprising. My friend says that the way they use the metaphor of vampires and humans is reminiscent of blacks and whites after the Civil War with the central idea of assimilation. She said that every time they say vampires she replaces it with the N word. Sometimes, it really does seem interchangeable.
I like the show because, well, I just like it. I don’t have a thing for vamps because I hated Buffy the Vampire Slayer so it can’t be inherent. True Blood takes place in Bon Temps, Louisiana and they have the WORST accents on this show. Especially the black chick. She’s the lead character from “How She Moves,” which I never saw. She is sort of stereotypical in the show-angry black chick with deep seeded issues stemming from a childhood with a drunk mother to loneliness issues. However, her character is obsessed with knowledge and reads on things from medical issues to the law and justice system. Either way her character can be slightly annoying but entertaining and vulnerable. We all love a little vulnerability. I know I do.
I do have questions about this show. Only read on if you don’t mind slight spoiling if you haven’t seen it. How did she become telepathic. What crossed in her genes. Her being Anna Paquin, Sookie is her characters name. She is the main human character of the show. she is slightly eccentric being that she hears others thoughts. So of course the old country folk think she’s a “retard” on a count of the fact that she think she a psychic and all [/end sarcasm] LOL. She has an affection for the new vampire in town, the first that they know of in Bon Temps. Everyone thinks she’s going to get herself in some sort of trouble, especially with random killings going on. Sookie’s brother, Jason, is dumb as a box of rocks. He somehow keeps being a murder suspect… wonder where this is going. I personally think eventually he will become a vampire. Those are just my thoughts stemming from his activities and his anti-vampire prejudices.
Overall, I plan to continue watching this show and seeing where it goes. I heard it already got renewed for a second season and they are only 5 episodes into the first season. HBO generally has shows that have a cult like following-The Wire, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Carnival was an HBO show right? Oz was big too. I will continue to watch without getting my hopes up too high. Although Anna Paquin is someone I think has good acting potential I’m not so sure of her believeability in this role. Stay tuned…

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am extremely excited about the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy tomorrow night. Ugly Betty too, but Grey’s is my little addiction, even though I probably won’t watch it during the actual airing due to my wonderful Digital Video Recorder, but it will bring great joy in knowing that it will be there. I also discovered last night was the premiere of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I was pleasantly surprised to see my DVR record light on, and checked to see what it was. I was delighted. This is the good thing about fall! I tried to get a countdown to put in here, but was unsuccessful, but oh well. Viva La Grey’s!! I can’t wait to see what develops between Callie and Hahn.. or even Derek and Meredith… And wow.. Izzey’s kiss with Alex…. so many questions!!!

I don’t know about everyone else, but this summer kind of sucked in regards to TV. I looked forward to TNTs “The Closer” for so long that when it finally premiered I had over hyped it to myself. But someone reminded me that last night was the season Premiere of the CW’s Gossip Girl, which I feel in love with last year during the writers strike. I spent a whole day hogging my roommates desktop so I could watch every episode online until i was caught up. I mean literally, a whole Saturday, I even ate in front of the PC. So after watching the return of Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen I sought a schedule of fall premieres. And I found a good one! Not that I really need it because I have a DVR that automatically picks these things up, but I needed to have it. Because deep down, its more anticipation than actually watching thats exciting. Anticipation is so important that people don’t even realize it. Anyway, here are a list of shows that i am looking forward to. Even though all summer I’ve been following spoilers, but those are never totally accurate because you never know what changes happen on the cutting room floor…
- 9/1/08 – Gossip Girl
- 9/25/08 – Grey’s Anatomy
- 9/25/08 – Ugly Betty
- 9/28/08 – Desperate Housewives
- 9/28/08 – Family Guy
- 9/28/08 – Brothers & Sisters
- 10/1/08 – Private Practice
- 10/3/08 – Everybody Hates Chris
- 10/3/08 – The Game
- 10/6/08 – Samantha Who?
- Honorable Mention – 9/3/08 – America’s Next Top Model
- Honorable Mention – 9/5/08 - Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader
Now, this list looks like I spend a lot of time in front of the TV, but I really don’t. I DVR them all. Do you like how I turned the DVR into a verb? That is pretty common these days. The proper way to say that was that I recorded them using my DVR. I wonder why we as people do that. Make verbs into nouns. Anyhoo, I did forget Nip/Tuck, which is such a guilty pleasure. I haven’t seen any new shows that I’m looking foward to trying. I did want to try Eli Stone last year but haven’t gotten around to it. Recently I started watching Entourage, but I won’t let myself watch new episodes until I catch up completely with prior seasons. I wonder what other shows people are looking forward to. I know Heroes is pretty popular among a few of my friends along with Friday Night Lights… hhhmmm.. not for me..
